David Kaplan, CPA, CFA – Chief Financial Officer, Equity Analyst

David started his career at Fidelity Investments in Salt Lake City and after graduate school, worked with James Hartmann as a Trader for a small-to-mid cap value manager (Summit Capital Partners) in Seattle, WA. At the time, Summit managed over $400 million for ultra-high net worth individuals in addition to an on-shore hedge fund. David then worked for VMF Capital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa first as an Equity Analyst and then as a Small Cap Portfolio Manager in 2000. Prior to leaving VMF Capital in 2008, he was responsible for more than $150 million in assets.

In addition to David’s role at MSU, he is the President of Cottonwood Asset Management. As a CPA and a CFA with more than 20 years of finance and investment experience, he is a broad-based resource for his clients’ everyday financial needs, preparing individual, corporate and partnership tax returns and assisting with tax planning.  He also manages his clients’ investments consistent with their tax situation, risk tolerance, time horizon and sophistication level.

David received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in 1992 and an MBA from the University of Washington in 1996.  He also holds a CPA license and the CFA designation.
